Oversight Project Secures Corrections to Inaccurate Stories About True the Vote
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 23, 2026
Washington, D.C.– The Oversight Project defended True the Vote against a series of news articles that falsely stated or implied that True the Vote was “the activist group” involved in unauthorized interactions with the Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) concerning using Social Security data for election integrity initiatives. The language gave the reader a false impression that True the Vote was the group involved in reporting alleging DOGE engaged in unauthorized discussions with an unnamed “political activist group.” That is not accurate. True the Vote had no such discussions with DOGE. The Oversight Project immediately jumped into the fray to correct this erroneous reporting, sending news outlets demands for retractions. Many outlets either retracted their story or clarified it based upon the letters sent by the Oversight Project.
The Oversight Project is committed to defending allies. Groups like True the Vote fight the good fight ensuring free and fair elections in America. It is vital that groups like True the Vote be laser focused on their mission of election integrity given the Department of Justice’s failure to date to aggressively fight for voter integrity. The Oversight Project has previously stood with True the Vote in urging the Department of Justice to withdraw a Biden era amicus brief supporting radical leftists suing True the Vote. The Department of Justice can and must do more to provide justice for its allies. The Oversight Project also believes that now more than even the conservative movement must stand together. We stand ready to fulfill the vital function of defending those under attack.
Oversight Project President Mike Howell made this statement:
“The radical left runs quite a vicious playbook. These smears are intentionally timed to discredit our allies as they’re gearing up for yet another critical voting cycle. It’s groups like True the Vote that are out there doing the hard work while politicians in Washington, D.C. diddle-daddle and only pay lip service to election integrity. Americans need their election integrity warriors on the field. We can’t wait for D.C. to wake up and take securing our elections seriously. The Oversight Project will always jump in to defend our partners from dirty tricks.”
Catherine Engelbrecht offered this statement:
“Truth still matters. When political operatives and their media allies spread falsehoods about our work, they are not just attacking True the Vote, they are attacking the millions of Americans who expect honest elections and honest reporting. We are grateful to the Oversight Project for standing in the gap so we can stay focused on securing America’s elections.”
