Oversight Project Condemns Democrats Continued Attacks on ICE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 26, 2026

Washington, D.C. The Oversight Project strongly condemns the violence aimed at disrupting Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations at Delaney Hall.  Elected officials are leading this law-breaking.

Visiting Fellow for Deportation Studies, Scott Mechowski, offered the following statement:

“Decades of law enforcement experience confirm that the organized, dangerous, and well-funded obstruction in New Jersey is completely different from past political interference and demands a federal response that matches its severity. Governors Murphy and Sherrill have built a sanctuary framework that actively shields criminal aliens from federal law enforcement—that is coordinated obstruction. Elected officials who incite crowds at Delaney Hall and NGOs interfering with federal operations are obstructionists, not humanitarians. What we are witnessing is not protest, it is anarchy. When crowds physically obstruct federal agents, it is a federal crime scene. The FBI, U.S. Marshals, and every available federal law enforcement asset must be deployed now to restore order, protect our agents, and send an unmistakable message: the full weight of federal authority is coming now. The agents on the ground deserve nothing less from leadership, including the Secretary of Homeland Security.”

Oversight Project President Mike Howell added:

“Senate Republicans went on vacation instead of keeping their promise to fund ICE.  Democrats took the opening and launched this latest attack on ICE personnel and operations at Delaney Hall.  ICE deserves funding, support, love, and praise.  I hope they get it from the Senate some day soon.”

The Oversight Project has repeatedly reminded lawmakers that storming ICE facilities, joining in mobs, fighting law enforcement, and related activity is not “congressional oversight”: https://itsyourgov.org/oversight-project-memo-invalid-oversight-defense-to-alleged-criminal-activity-in-newark-new-jersey-by-members-of-congress/

President Mike Howell also educated Democrats on this legal point during congressional testimony, telling Rep. Yasmin Ansari that if his advice was not followed, then “it’s going to end up with more Democrats clogging our jails, I want to keep you out of jail.”
