Oversight Project Applauds Creation of Dedicated Fund for Victims of Weaponization

The Oversight Project proposed an idea to the Justice Department for a way to compensate victims of weaponization in December 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 19, 2026

Washington, D.C.– The Oversight Project applauds the Department of Justice’s creation of a $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund to compensate the victims of weaponization.  This fund will compensate victims of left-wing weaponization and lawfare for their legal fees, time spent in prison, and other unjust damages they have sustained.  The Oversight Project has long advocated for the victims of weaponized government persecution to receive adequate financial relief in the form of restitution for the devastating losses they suffered at the hands of abusive federal investigative and law enforcement officers, and we thank President Trump and the Justice Department for having the wisdom, bravery, and willpower to follow through and execute on this important issue.

In December 2025, the Oversight Project launched a campaign to prioritize the victims of weaponization by the Biden Administration.  We sent a letter to the Justice Department and President Trump laying out the legal framework for how the Judgment Fund and federal statutes such as the Federal Tort Claims Act may be lawfully administered to compensate victims of government weaponization.  We have also contributed op-eds calling for victims of weaponization to receive financial compensation.  We are pleased to see that the planned Anti-Weaponization Fund draws on our work  in order to provide restitutionary relief to the many victims of Biden-era weaponization.

President Mike Howell gave the following statement:

“The arc of the universe bends towards justice.  In the context of the awful weaponization of the Biden-era that means not only accountability for wrongdoers but also taking steps to restore the victims. They will never be made fully whole, but they certainly deserve financial compensation.  I’m thrilled by President Trump’s bold and selfless leadership here.”

Vice President of Litigation Jeff Clark gave the following statement:

“For nearly six years, I’ve been defending myself against truly vapid and silly charges by the DC Office of Disciplinary Counsel. They claim I tried to lie when in reality all I was doing was proposing a different course of action than two of my fellow lawyers in leadership at DOJ. Lawyers disagree with each other all the time. The DC Bar charges aimed at me were at all times an effort at weaponized politics. Nothing more.

I’m gratified that President Trump and the Justice Department have established a fund to take some steps to making me whole for my damages. This ordeal stripped me of income and, worse yet, threatened to tear my family apart.”
